Christ Saved My Soul

Many years ago, I changed the lyrics to a classic golden oldie rocker, and had our church men's choir sing it one Sunday morning. Although there have been many covers of this tune, my personal favorite is the one by Huey Lewis and the News on their fantastic album Four Chords and Several Years Ago.

Christ Saved My Soul
A parody of the song "Shake, Rattle and Roll" by Charles E. Calhoun

Verse 1
Let me tell you a story, about the man I used to be.
Let me tell you a story, about the man I used to be.
So listen up closely, 'cause you just might be like me.

Verse 2
I was a sinner, always tearin' up the town.
I was a sinner, always tearin' up the town.
My mama was prayin' that I'd turn my life around.

Verse 3
Night after night, she got down on her knees to pray.
Night after night, she got down on her knees to pray.
And then one day Jesus washed my sins away.

Chorus
(I said) Christ saved my soul!
Christ saved my soul!
Christ saved my soul!
Christ saved my soul!
I believed in His name and He put me on the roll.

Verse 4
He changed my life; I didn't wanna swear no more.
He changed my life; I didn't wanna drink no more.
The Spirit came down and He knocked me on the floor.

Verse 5
And now that I'm saved, I wanna live my life for Him.
And now that I'm saved, I wanna live my life for Him.
I'm a new man now; I don't wanna be where I've been.

Verse 6
And when I die, Jesus I will behold.
And when I die, Jesus I will behold.
And on that day I'll be walkin' those streets of gold.

Chorus
(I said) Christ saved my soul!
Christ saved my soul!
Christ saved my soul!
Christ saved my soul!
I believed in His name and He put me on the roll.
